Transfrontier Shipment of Waste – October 2023 Summary
The latest figures from the Environment Agency show that, in the latest year, 2.2 million tonnes of waste were exported from England under Transfrontier Shipment (TFS) regulations. The first chart below indicates that this was predominantly ‘Mixed General Waste’ (i.e. RDF heading for energy recovery). RDF exports, which had been falling over recent years, have stabilised and are even showing signs of modest growth:
Even so, taking the RDF fraction out of the figures, we see that there are 473,000 tonnes of other forms of waste / resources, with ‘Non-Metallic Wastes’ and ‘Chemical Wastes’ being the major constituents. Moreover, this overall tonnage is also rising, as can be seen below:
Within the ‘Non-Metallic Wastes’ fraction, wood waste exports have risen significantly, up by +43% year-on-year:
Drilling into the ‘Wood Waste’ category and looking at the Notifiers, Enva Wood Recycling (formerly Hadfields) is evidently faring well. It is apparent that there are additional companies entering this market also such as Geminor and Andusia, both experts at waste exports predominantly in the RDF sector:
