TFS Overview Dashboard Update – Summer 2021
The Transfrontier Shipment of Waste (“TFS”) Overview Dashboard has been released by Footprint Services, covering shipments up to and including the end of June 2021.
All of the charts included in this article are very simple and straightforward to produce within the Dashboard, available on a subscription basis (please enquire for details), allowing users to find information based on EWC Codes, Notifiers, Consignees and Countries.
Not surprisingly, given the tumultuous events of the past 18 months, exported volumes in the past year (12 months to end of June 2021) have shown a marked decline compared to the preceding 12 months (“Latest Year -1”), although the chart below indicates that this may be part of a broader trend and not entirely attributable to Coronavirus:
It is worth remembering that Refuse-Derived Fuels (“RDF”) constitute the majority of the exported volumes. RDF volumes have been drifting downwards in recent years as more Energy from Waste facilities open in the UK, along with other geopolitical issues such as Brexit and the imposition of a Waste Import Tax in the Netherlands. The chart below is filtered for RDF (EWC 19 12 10), demonstrating the declining volumes, although there is some underlying indication of stabiliation:
Ignoring RDF activity, when the Dashboard is filtered for “Hazardous” waste, this being waste streams with hazardous EWC codes, we see that volumes have actually risen in the past year, in spite of turbulence. The purple block in the latest year is Denmark, which has received nearly 50,000 tonnes of hazardous waste, mostly in the form of used oils:
Indeed, ‘Used Oils’ account for the increase in exports in the past year. Off-Specification Chemical Wastes are also significant (dark green below), as are Discarded Machines And Equipment Components (these being classified as hazardous WEEE waste):
Filtering the dashboard specifically for Used Oils, the conclusion is that shipments to Avista Green ApS in Denmark are a key factor in the tonnage increase. This company receives used oil and re-refines it into high quality base oils for reuse (see www.avistagreen.dk):
The TFS Overview Dashboard gives you supply chain information on all waste streams exported from England under Transfrontier Shipment of Waste regulations.
