EU Energy From Waste – January 2022
The latest European Energy from Waste (“EfW”) Dashboard from Footprint Services, giving interactive profile data and mapping on all Energy from Waste facilities across Europe and Scandinavia, has just been released.
The report identifies EfW sites, giving their headline feedstock capacity as well as their declared power production (MWe and MWt). The latest report covers 528 operational sites across Europe / Scandinavia, representing a total operation capacity of 103 million tonnes.
UK Operational: Presently, the UK has an operational EfW capacity of just over 15 million tonnes across 55 sites (for Municipal Solid Wastes, not other form of thermal recovery such as biomass, meat & bonemeal etc).
UK Development: 23 facilities are undergoing actual development at various stages, representing a further capacity of 6.5 million tonnes.
UK Planning: 50 further sites have been granted Planning Permission across the UK – were these all to progress to completion, they would add 13.7 million tonnes of capacity. The chart below suggests that this might be a somewhat excessive outcome relative to our European neighbours.
The maps below indicate the present range of sites across the UK, showing Operational, Under Development and Planning Approved locations by region (NOTE – the scale of bubble size differs chart by chart):
